Wayne's Septic Tank Pumping

Why should you have your septic tank pumped?

The septic tank removes solids from the waste water. The soil absorption field then filters and treats the clarified septic tank effluent and distributes it through the field lines into the soil.

Removing the solids from the wastewater protects the soil absorption system from clogging. In addition to removing solids, the septic tank also promotes biological digestion of a portion of the solids and stores the remaining undigested portion.

The septic tank removes solids by holding wastewater in the tank, which allows the heavier solids to settle as sludge and the lighter particles to gather at the top. Almost half of the solids that enter the tank decompose. The rest accumulate in the tank.

As a septic system is used, sludge continues to accumulate in the bottom of the septic tank. Correctly designed tanks usually have enough space for up to three years safe accumulation of sludge, depending upon how many people use the system.

When the sludge level gets too high, sewage has less time to settle before leaving the tank, which means that more solids escape into the absorption area.

When no settling occurs before the sewage flows to the soil absorption field, the system will fail by clogging the field lines. To prevent this, the tank must be pumped periodically.

Good maintenance avoids big problems.

Common Septic Myths

1)."My neighbor went 20 years without a problem."

Reality: The problem hasn't been discovered yet. When it is it may cost thousands to repair.

2). "We never put food or chlorine in the tank, so we're okay."

Reality: Even the best bacterial action will only consume about 50 percent of the waste solids. Plastics, some papers, grit and wood fibers will not decompose. They must be removed.

3). "We had it inspected before we moved in."

Reality: A good inspection lets you know the current state of the system, but cannot predict its health going forward with a new family and new demands.

In addition to cleaning, we offer inspections for home sale certifications.
